You can find almost anything on the internet. I found documentation that some oral family history was true. My Uncle told me that his great-grandfather, James Washington Curtis, was killed by a Confederate solider during the Civil War. But because he was a widower with four children under the age of 7, he didn't serve. He nursed a soldier he found dying on his land back to health. The soldier then came back and killed him. James lived in Washington, Arkansas; Arkansas was a divided state with both Union and Confederate sensibilities.

During the American Civil War, Arkansas was a Confederate state, though it had initially voted to remain in the Union. Following the capture of Fort Sumter in April 1861, Abraham Lincoln called for troops from every Union state to put down the rebellion, but Arkansas and several other states seceded instead. For the rest of the war, Arkansas played a major role in controlling the vital Mississippi River and neighboring states, including Tennessee and Missouri.

The town of Washington itself has an interesting history, it was major stop for pioneers on their way to Texas. Washington accommodated the travelers with a large tavern, which hosted people like Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Stephen F. Austin, Benjamin Milam and Jim Bowie. The town also had a blacksmith shop where, according to legend, James Bowie commissioned his eponymous knife.

Process notes:
I used ArtsyPaper No. 2 as my background. Added a mask from Melange-FotoBlendz and clipped my big photo to it. Because my family history happened in Arkansas, I found a vintage map of Arkansas during the Civil War and placed it on the right hand side. I blended the map into the background paper. I added a transfer from the APP that looked similar and placed it on the lower left corner to balance the design. Added the multi-media frame and clipped photo to it. Luckily, I found photos that had the right color background for this design. I added several overlays from Find My Way to accent the vintage map look, I masked out several areas for a smoother transition. Title and text completed the layout.
