Hemi-parasitic. Indian paintbrush intertwines its roots with a host plant to derive nutrients and water from it. However, this doesnt damage its neighbor. Sagebrush often helps it thrive.

Remember ice on the windshield on July 4th. We saw hummingbirds, and Indian paintbrush mixed with sagebrush covered whole hillsides.
