for a few of years I
had been trying to figure
out how to make a new
surface for a little side
table I had with non
standard measurements...
The original rattan
surface had disintegrated,
but the metal base was
still in good condition.
In the summer of
2015 I spent a weekend
in Riverside with Joe.
On Saturday morning
we spent some time
browsing a favorite store
of his, an antique shop.
In this store I happened across similar tables
covered with what I assumed were antique yardsticks...
I then spent a couple of years trying to find antique yardsticks I finally gave
up and decided to go with
current day ones, staining
some of them to add variety and the feeling of age.
In the course of doing this I found wooden yardsticks
are among the disappearing things we thought would be
around forever!!!
It was a challenge to find any at all in stores... I paid for a crappy one at ACE hardware, and then found beautiful
free ones at Meeks, but
they had a clear finish on them that prevented staining them.. I used some old ones I had around the house and
acquired one from Tony in Grants Pass, that he had gotten whille working for the American Red Cross... I
tried to collect from as many different sources as possible.
I was very happy with
how it turned out..
The Glass top was a garage sale find that was almost a perfect fit and gave a nice protective surface.
