Journaling: Chiharu Shiota has amassed 300+ donated shoes - along with a handwritten note from each donor confiding a personal memory. She plans to spend several days using 4 miles of red yarn to link the shoes to a single overhead hook. "String can sag, connect or loosen. It has so many human qualities; it has tension." The mesh aims to illustrate the emotional heft of these objects, even though they are no longer worn. Ms. Shiota said that after she left Japan to study art in Germany, she felt increasingly uneasy, with neither place feeling like home. "I felt this gap that reminded me of trying on old shoes.
