Beach day

Another not very good little snap that I have been working on; this is one of my Dad's sisters and the young man who became her husband - Uncle Walter to me, both no longer with us. No idea where it was taken or when but they look very young here so at a guess it must again be in the twenties.

Initially I had to use the healing brush to work on cracks and marks ( age spots lol!) I then masked the photograph revealing the parts I wanted using a fotoblendz as a brush then duplicated the layer 3 times and worked with brushes to either cover up more of the photograph or reveal different parts using different blending modes to try and get a bit more definition to the figures. the bottom layer is normal with a bit of curves used, second layer is multiply and top layer is hard light 29%. I still wasn't happy with my uncle's face which isn't so clear in the original photograph so used another two layers with only his face revealed set to colour dodge 22% and 54% opacity. I don't really know what I'm doing, I just experiment until I think it looks OK :) The bottom layer is a plainish artsy paper and on top of that is an artsy paper on Multiply mode. layered on top of these are a selection of overlays and transfers on different blending modes; some are colour burn, some soft light and some overlay, this allowed me to build up colour but retain the texture from the original paper. I clipped another paper to a modgrunge fotoblendz (discontinued unfortunately) to give me the sun effect, duplicated twice and changed the mode to hard light, 71% then 34% opacity fill, then used a fotoglow on 50% opacity to give a little bit of warmth to the page. Layered on top of this is a cloud brush and birds. The water reflection is a transfer from AP H2o which I also masked and then revealed using some artsy brushes. I desaturated this slightly. The rest is some extra stains and texture from AT miniGelid, a Subtle Quote wordart and a frame from AP Magic Rabbit.

Apologies as I have forgotten what the background paper is... but on top of it on multiply mode is a paper and some transfers from:

you're a master at combining Anna's different products and trying out different buttons in Photoshop. Thanks for the description of how you did it. That use of the H2O paper for reflections is just genius. , great effect.
