I find these few photographs that we have of my mother, when she was relatively young, endlessly fascinating. The direct, steady gaze is constant. The changing fashions, though, are noticeable. The earliest, probably taken when she was about seventeen and newly arrived in England after ten years confined to an institution in Dublin, is distinctly unfashionable and could have been taken twenty or more years earlier! Then comes the much more trendy short hairstyle, followed eventually by the Marcel Wave in time for her wedding. As a child I envied and admired her waves as compared to my own dead straight hair and got quite a shock when I later discovered that she went regularly to get it waved!!
