Journaling reads: I visited the Grand Canyon for the first time in December 1984 with Kathy Gibbons and her friends Barb and Joe. We drove up from her house in Mesa during the night and the next morning, began our walk to cabins in the base of the canyon. Unfortunately I sprained my ankle on the way down, so I spent the few days in the canyon nursing the sprain, knowing that a helicopter ride out would be much too expensive for me to afford. I hobbled all the way back up, and out of the canyon, but even in the pain I was in, it was so hard to not be totally overwhelmed by the beauty of such a magnificent place as this.
