Finding Things
Im obsessed with finding things. Its always a good day when I find something. I remember one day at our house in Newark, I was likely only about 7 years old, I heard that the lady upstairs had lost something, I think it was a necklace. I scoured the house, the yard, the front, the neighborhood. I wanted to find it, and I did. After more than an hour of looking around, I found a little medallion, it might have been a holy medal, right by our front door. I excitedly took it upstairs and knocked on the door, and when she answered the door, I proudly presented it. Im not sure what I expected, perhaps a hero's welcome, perhaps a reward. All I got was a rather lukewarm thanks.
But I have never stopped. Once I found what I thought was a diamond in front of an escalator in a Washington DC Metro
station. It wasnt a diamond, just a CZ. Ive started keeping a box on my table, dropping things into it on a regular basis, usually keys or jewelry or unidentified metal objects. I have a separate receptacle for money. My Delft Dutch shoe holds all the money I find, and I think of Dad each time I drop something in. For I know it comes from him, this obsession.
This week after the disappointment of the Giants loss, as I was walking down the rather dark ramp with my sunglasses on, I spied something that turned out to be a $1 gold coin. Imm not sure how I saw it, it was so dark, it must have been my 6th finding sense. I had to look at it for a long time, as I dont think Ive even seen such a gold coin. If for no other reason, its been a good week because I found something.
