Hello, O Scrappy Ones! Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. Since it was Independence Day here in the States yesterday, I finally got some much-needed time off from work! Woot! Although I did do some of the more traditional July 4th activities--watched a parade, ate barbeque, ooohhhed and aaaahhhed at the fireworks--I also found some time to do a bit of scrapping!

I'm still plugging away at scrapping our Chicago vacation from a couple of years ago. On one of our walks downtown we saw the wonderful Great Clocks which are located at either end of the Marshall Field's building. (I guess it is called the Macy's building now...RIP Marshall Field!) I wasn't sure how to scrap this photo but I knew I wanted this clock on its own page. The latest Anna Challenge https://ozone.oscraps.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29604 and the pages people are making for that challenge gave me some inspiration. Thanks, Ladies!

The Marshall Field Great Clocks have been popular meeting places for Chicagoans for over a hundred years.

Marshall Fields was a well-known and well-respected department store, whose flagship store was located in downtown Chicago on N. State St. between Randolph St. and Washington St. Actually, the building is still there, having been declared a National Historical Landmark in 1978, although Marshall Fields is no more. In 2005 Macys acquired the Marshall Field Company, kept the building and in 2006 changed the building name to Macys.

Of the many distinctive features of this grand old building, none are more iconic than the two Great Clocks, one located at the northwest corner (Randolf St. and State St; this is the clock pictured here) and one located at the southwest corner (Washington St. and State St.) of the building. The southwest clock was installed in 1897 and the northwest clock was installed in 1904. Designed by the firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst and White, each clock is made of 7 tons (yowza!) of cast bronze and hung by ornamental ironwork projected several feet from the building. The face of each clock is 46" across, the minute hands are 27" and the hour hands are 20" long. The clocks are impulse operated from a master timepiece located in the store. The timepiece is checked twice daily with the Arlington time signal and corrects the clocks every hour.
