'Christmas Tree'

Journaling: Christmas Tree. Ella and Luke both decorate the tree these days. It gives me chance to step back a bit and observe what fine human beings they are becoming, but in that same moment, one will say something to the other, almost as if they are trying to persuade me otherwise. Mine bicker as all siblings do (and probably less than most) but the Christmas tree saga is really getting old...

Its supposed to be fun but usually turns into a bit of a battleground as Ella likes to dictate what decoration is place on what branch. She doesnt want to mix colors, and embellishment should definitely not be too close together. Luke, on the other hand, is a 12 years old who just wants to hang a few things on the tree - The attention span just isnt there for anything else.

My younger just married self relates to Ella, while the more mature Mom that now prevails, cant help but feel a pang of sympathy for Luke. Observation becomes less enchanting as they begin to hurl insult at one another, then Luke storms off to his room. The happy ending to the story is that Ella, with a little coaxing, sees the error of her ways. She apologizes. They make friends again and the tree lights up the living room once more. Another crisis averted. Parenting is hard.
