A Tree Without A Root

I collect old photographs, and love the photos of children the most. When I first looked at the gorgeous new ArtPlay, I immediately thought of this photograph, most likely taken in the late 1800s. I know back then it had to be a big deal to get a photo taken, and I imagine the family was so thrilled this precious photo - quite possibly the only one they ever had of their children. It bothers me that descendants do not own and cherish this photo or the others in my collection. Even though they are not family members of mine, I cherish them just the same - but always wondering what their lives were like - hoping they all had long and happy lives.

The process: This weeks ArtPlay is gorgeous. I chose to blend in a heritage photo from the late 1800s not your typical heritage page, but I loved the colors in the kit, and I feel it worked well with the photograph. I began with one of the premade background papers. I added the CanvasTranfer, and attached the cabinet card to both the canvas and the wood layer, but I brought down the opacity of the portion attached to the wood layer. I placed another copy of the photograph over everything, and masked out all but the 3 children. I copied the Canvas Texture layer, and placed it on top of all the photos, and applied the blend mode multiply to it to add the canvas texture to the photo. I then began adding various transfers to the layout. I added the polka dot paper, changed its blend mode to color burn, and masked it out so that only the bottom third was visible. I then added the various ScriptTease brushes around the edge of the photo, changing their color to a soft sepia tone, and masking out any areas where they fell on the children. I then added the frame, and changed its color to a pale pink, masking out the center, vertical edges of the frame. I then added the various elements to the lower right corner of the photo, plus I added to the upper right hand corner of the page, the dragonfly, the word strip and the colorglow from the Natural Instinct Sampler, changing its blend mode to overlay. I blended in the butterfly to the right of the photo, and then added Edge Overlay, changing its color and blend mode to multiply, bringing its opacity down to soften it. The Chinese Proverb was added underneath the photo.

thanks for looking
stunning layout. Love the layering and blending and how that photo still keeps centre stage. beautiful proverb too
