A Glimpse of the Past - Page 1

Photos are from our trip to Tasmania last year. These photos were taken on Sarah Island, a small island off the Tasmanian western coast.
During the early part of the 19th century approx. 278 convicts were housed in various buildings scattered around the island.
The ruins in these photos are of the main Penitentiary building in which 89 convicts slept in three rooms. On the day we were there it was fairly bleak, cold and windy! It must have been quite a horrible place back then, the inhumanities that no doubt took place......
The wind blowing through the tree tops seemed to be carrying the voices of a distant past and made for an eerie and mysterious atmosphere.

Thanks for looking :) - Ona
