You've charted a course and I bet your results are stellar! I am also trying to use brushes more...doesn't come naturally to me so takes work. Also, on the journaling goal, especially for travel books when there are so many details, I am in the habit of jotting daily specifics in the Evernote app on my phone--names, places, important things I want to remember. (I use the free version, you might want to have a look at it.)
