2017 Giant Pumpkin Race

Splotchy orange orbs glided through the dark blue-green water of Oregons Lake Tualatin Saturday, during the 14th annual West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta. guided by pirates, superheroes, Scooby Doo, and even the mayor of Tualatin. Note that wearing a costume is a requirement.

Pumpkins are provided by the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers Club. Grown over several states, the organizers, never know until the morning of the race how many pumpkins will actually arrive. Surprisingly, theres little preparation in making these giant pumpkins into boats, as they are almost hollow inside. They only take a few minutes to carve out on the day. The seeds are saved to make more giant pumpkins!

As dozens of adults splashed around in giant pumpkins, thousands of eager all-ages onlookers cheered them on.

The competitors, afloat in pumpkins ranging from a few hundred to more than a thousand pounds, had to collect six Whiffle balls and one small rubber ball from around the lake at Tualatin Commons before racing back to the finish line.

Note that these photos came from prior years, since it was VERY rainy this year...
