I think that is true for many places. I'd do the 70's and 80's in lots of places. My DH was onsite for 6 months in LA in the late 80's. I visited every other weekend...when flying was easier. I remember one day when we got up early to visit the mountains, the ocean and the desert...all in one day. What a fun time that was. I did hate NFL football on Sundays in the Pacific time zone. Was over way too soon. LOLLet's see if I can say this delicately:
I grew up in Southern California, and it was the most beautiful place - mountains and ocean within 2 hours of me - everything anyone could want.
California is no longer the place I grew up in. So California in the 1980's is the best place I have ever lived.
I remembered our discussion about that when I was driving through KC. I can't help but wonder if it would be my favorite place today...perhaps not.living in kansas city now and dont like it at all - wish i was back in seattle - so pretty, the weather is so much better and seattle is so dog friendly .
Love this answer Jeannette!I did not move around much. But I'm so happy where I live now. I wouldn't change it for anything!!
What a happy little story. I think that the people around us make such a huge difference in how we feel about a place. Your "compound" is a pretty outstanding place from the looks of it!That IS a toughie like Amanda @Amandajk said. We've lived so many places, too. I think I was the happiest when we got transferred to the Detroit area, for my husband's work. We had always lived in Indiana, and I loved Michigan! The summers there are so beautiful - we built a new home, and I was so in love with it, too. Four of the guys that my husband moved with us, all decided to build in the same subdivision as us. We all had a wonderful relationship and summer evenings were party time. Three of us lived next door to each other and we had lots of "traveling backyard parties". Almost every evening, when the guys weren't traveling, we got together. All of us wives got along so well, and we had our own little "transferred family". My kids still talk about those happy, fun years.
I love the things that draw us to places. Water does for me what the mountains do for you. Not that I don't enjoy some mountain time as well.Ohhh, that's a toughie!
I have lived so many places. But my favorites have been connected to the mountains, hills, & nature.
Childhood- would have to be our home in Mansfield, Ohio. The house had a huge backyard- a few acres with rolling hills and a winding creek lined with woods. So many adventures on that property! Sliding down hills on cardboard in the summer, and sleds in the winter! Summertime crawdad searching and barefoot walking in the creek. We also lived in Indiana along the Maumee River. I loved taking walks in the forest along the river. It still amazes me to this day that I never once considered there were snakes around! Haaa!
As an adult, Ligonier PA. is so beautiful!! A quaint mountain town where our daughter was born. Then Santa Lucia, Honduras- waaaaay up in the mountains ( 5,000 feet!) where we grew bananas, mangoes, guava, lemons, avacados & walked through the clouds in our backyard! Another quaint, "colonia" (town), this one up near La Tigre Parque Nacional.
So as an adult, I would say the mountains still are calling... #kiss
