Pixels & DPI

Hi All

I havent bothered before but...... I have been asked by someone if I would submit some of my beach photos to a free magazine here where I live.. However, to get good clarity they require the photos be as large as possible with 300 dpi.... makes sense so far!

I have a Nikon D90 (which I love I might add)
I shoot in RAW (which Ive been told I should, if I want to play with them)
I have an iMac (another item I LOVE LOVE)
I use PSE9

Now, my problem is.......
If I look at a photo in iPhoto, it tells me my number of pixels (which is HUGE) and that I shot in raw.... (fab)
when I retrieve the photo into PSE9 it says the photo is 72dpi (NOT SO GOOD) (the tab on the info panel which comes up says 'Camera Data')

Can someone tell me please why or specifically where it is changing to such a low resolution.....
is it my Camera
is it PSE9
is it iPhoto
I have NO CLUE whatsoever..... I would be eternally grateful for some clues
(Ive only had my camera for about 6-8 years! Ha! and I dont even know how long Ive had it.... Oh Lordy.... someone shoot me NOW!!!!! :eek2:

Thank you Lilly.... A bit confusing, but Ive changed them all now to 300dpi, not sure if I did it the right way, but we'll see what happens....

You're a gem ...... :)

Janet, I only shoot with my iPhone but when I get my images to iPhoto and then into Lightroom and/or PSE10/11 they are huge in terms of size (45.333inx34") and pixels (2448x3284) and at 72dpi.

Once in PSE I can certainly up the dpi to 300 and reduce the size. I'm not really sure that you can add pixels if they weren't already there but....I always do this and it seems to work for me. Ignorance can be bliss sometimes!

The request you got from the magazine is rather vague. While they want a 300dpi image do they want a 60" image?

Better minds than I can probably answer you here and see if they can explain why your camera does not export at 300 or is it an iPhoto issue that image only come in as 72.

I believe the problem is how the photo is "retrieved" in PSE. I don't know PSE, I have Photoshop CS. When I open a raw file from Finder, I right-click the image and it offers Open With Photoshop CS6. This starts Adobe Camera Raw, a plug-in that converts RAW to PSD.
You don't say how you open your raw image?

Thank you Maureen and Romy.....

Maureen when My raw images are loaded into PSE they are just like yours, a huge size in inches and pixels, and showing 72dpi.... This is exactly what I didn't understand, why is it showing 72dpi.... I think after reading the article that Lilly posted for me I'm not so worried about it now...... the only way I thought of to change the dpi to 300, was to go to image size (in PSE) and change it there.... Is that how you change the dpi?
