NSBR - My Grandma is 100 yrs old

Yesterday was my grandmother's 100th birthday. Quite a milestone, although she is barely aware of it all, and will be very disoriented at the birthday party my uncle is throwing for her on Sunday.

I was challenged recently to create pages about her for the May issue of Digital Artisan Notebook Essentials magazine (which I can't post yet, sorry) and it got me thinking about how she was, and how she is now and how I want to remember her. I realised that I didn't want to scrap a photo of her now as this really doesn't resemble the amazing, strong woman in my memory. And of course, all the photos I have of her when I was a child are truly terrible!

It also got me thinking about living that long and whether this milestone is something lots of us will experience now that medical science is so advanced. It may surprise you to learn that my grandmother currently has breast cancer for the second time (how's that for bad luck?!), but the doctors have decided not to treat it and frankly, she's fine - I believe it attacks very much slower when the patient is very old. Obviously, we're all very different ages here at Oscraps, but just imagine what might be possible when we get to this age.

SO, my random thought for today, would you want to live to be 100?

PS: for any of you Brits out there thinking "well at least I'd get a telegram from the queen" - not true! It doesn't happen automatically, you have to apply for it! Rather takes the sheen off it, doesn't it?!

Wow Selena!! Happy Birthday to your Grandma! She must be a remarkable lady!! Yes, I would like to live to be that age!! I look forward to seeing all the wondrous advancements in the world. That is as long as I have my physical and mental health! We too get Congrats from the Queen, but like you say you have to apply for it a head of time. :becky:

happy birthday to grandma , she must have seen so many changes in her lifetime.
I do remember Tom's grandmother telling us about all the changes she went through , she was from 1890 it was fascinating.

would I like to be 100?? mmm not sure unless they give me a new body , the way it's hurting now , it would have to improve dramatically to put up with it for another 40 years or so. and to be honest I'm not sure I like the idea of patching octogenarians up so they can go another 10 years or so.
Sometimes I get the feeling you're not allowed to simply die anymore, oops I'm getting all philosophical now.

happy birthday grandma

Happy Birthday to your Grandmother, Selena! Pity she can't enjoy it more, but a marvel all the same.

Would I want to live so long? Well, my father died at 98 ten years ago and was not in good health or very aware for some of the last part and I never want to be in the shape he was, so given the shape I'm in now (or, more correctly, NOT in) I'd say, no way. But as long as I can care for myself? You bet!

Have to say, I'm with you Jean. My grandmother does not officially suffer from anything like Alzheimers, but she's lost all memories now except when she was a girl and she fails to recognise my mother, her own daughter, now. She can sort of feed herself but is chair bound and can't see/hear/concentrate on the TV or radio, so it's really not much of a life. My uncle employs some lovely, kind women to look after her in his home, but they don't speak any English and she doesn't speak any Belarusian. So on balance, I'm not sure I do want to live that long.

Happy birthday to your Grandma, Selena!!!! Did you apply for the Queen's telegram anyway? To my knowledge, none of my relatives have ever made it to 100, which kinda scares me a little :scared: ... but I'm hoping to buck the trend!

Congrats to your grandma! My grandma is going to be 90 next year. She's doing pretty good and I can see her reaching 100! If I'm healthy enough and alert I would like to reach 100. I would love to see all the advances and how things change in time as well. 2081 sounds so far away...

Happy birthday to your grandma.

The way I feel right now-- nope. Wouldn't want to live to 100, let alone 45 (next month hahah!). But if I can beat this Lyme-- then all bets are ON the table. :D

Thank you all for your good wishes for my grandmother. We had a large party yesterday with about 60 family members who'd come from all over Britain to see my grandmother - who failed to recognise anyone but seemed contented enough. My daughter commented on how it was like having a wake for her whilst she was still alive, which Ginny thinks is a much better way of doing things as you actually get to see and talk to the loved one - good logic from a 12 yr old.

My grandmother died peacefully at tea time today.

Strange how life goes.

ps. was your grandma's name Peggy?

Thank you everyone. My mother and I are sitting here reminiscing over half forgotten memories.

And yes, Ellen, her nick name was indeed Peggy. How did you know?

Oh Selena. Here I was planning to open this thread and congratulate your Grandma on 100 years...and then saw that she passed. The fact that she waited until after the milestone...I don't know but I can't help but think that was the perfect example of the very strong woman that you loved. How powerful to hang on until then...

Fabulous! And if I could still have my wits about me, I'd want to be 100. It brings to mind the quote by A. A. Milne. 'If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.',

((hugs)) to your entire family!

Selena- if I have a choice that is exactly the way I would want to go. I am so sorry for the loss of your grandmother, but am so happy that she and your family were able to enjoy her and be with her that way.
And Ginny- spot on, she gets it from her mum.

funny you posting this.... I have been arguing with my mum about the fact that I am very matter of fact in saying I do not wish to live too long...my health is already killing my quality of life - and I don't think one should keep fighting and fighting just for the sake of not dying...
I know people over 90 who have great quality of life, in that case, yes, all for celebrating life...but I don't think one should keep pushing it...
my views go into a very difficult territory which includes eutanasia & right of choice (termination of pregnancies) which I'm not gonna go into because are subjects we can be discussing for life....
but in my case, right now (I will be 55 in September, so I'm considered young still)
I am not doing the diabetes diet 100%
I have made some changes and I eat better, but what I m always saying is that, if I am to deprive myself of the only couple of things I enjoy...in order to keep alive....
I rather die happy.
anyway, I better not keep at it because (as I said on the Daily Os) am not in a good place in my mind & body right now & dont want to depress you all

Hope you Gran has a great time, we can only hope for them to have some peace/fun/love whilst they are alive...and this is what I can feel you do...

oh, and about the Queen telegramm....apologies if you (or anyone else here) are Royalists.... Im not anti royals, but couldn't give a monkey about getting a telegram from her....(actaully I rather she saves the money and deposits in my account LOL)things that get me happy come from my family & friends...and she most certainly isn't LOL
