Making Your Bed

Last week, a member of a local neighborhood group I belong to posed the question: "Do you make your bed every day?" She claimed that in 53 years, she had only NOT made her bed perhaps 5 times. That got me thinking about my own habits. I have gone through periods where I faithfully made my bed every morning, and have also had plenty of times where I was just "meh".

I fully subscribe to the theory that if you make you bed in the morning, no matter how badly the rest of your day goes, at least you accomplished that one thing. That perspective is laid out in a rather well-known commencement speech by Adm. William H. McRaven of the US Navy. Here's a You Tube link to that part of his speech:

Having said that, did I make my bed this morning? No. Yesterday? No. The day before? Yes. Tomorrow? Probably. ;)

How about you?

About 75% of the time I would guess? We try but sometimes it’s just not priority.

I can tell you for 100% certain that there is always at least one unmade bed in our house- the kiddos never make theirs lol

Always! I read a long time ago that disciplined people always made their beds. My grandkids always laughed at me, when they were little, because I always made my bed. They couldn't understand why I did it for myself. If my bed's unmade, my brain is. However, lately, with the sun direction changing, the cat has taken possession of my bed because it's in the sun. I have to get at it early before he parks himself right in the middle. haha He's there right now.

I make my bed every day. I need to find a nice bedroom after a long day of work.
It is like a comfort to lie down on a well-made bed, and a happiness to open it like turning a page of a good book every night...

The bed is always made ... but not by me :). iIt's my husband who always does it...we are both retired and the responsibilities are divided.

Put me in the category of It Depends. It depends mostly on how many dogs are sleeping on it and if I can get them to move. LOL
I do like having the sheets and comforter pulled up neatly in the mornings but nothing is tucked in or anything like that. Some days I will put some throw pillows back, other days they stay on the floor where I tossed them the night before. It doesn't make sense for me to get it perfect because--- "dogs." Whisky thinks after she eats, the best thing in the world to do is race around the house, jump on the bed, wiggle all over, and throw the pillows everywhere.

My kids are total opposites- my DD makes her bed up every morning. She had texted me from school to ask if I can pull the cog=mforter up so it was neat when he came home. She had run late in the morning but didn't want to come home to it all messed up. My son-- don't even want to think what it looks like in there!

I make my bed almost 100% of the time. The only time I don't is if the back is being 'iffy' about bending over. I like walking through the bedroom in the day to see the bed made up nicely. And it is so nice at night to slip into a bed where the sheets are unwrinkled and smooth. I will say that I don't usually put the pillow shams back on the bed each day but will add them if I have visitors coming over as the doors into the bedroom stay open to the hallway and the bed is visible when guests use the main bathroom.

Every single day! First it cleans your energy and gives you fresh start, second with your wake up you already have checking out 1 task.
I'm pretty sure that I'm read a psychological article, where was explained that not making your bed is sign for low self-esteem!
Don't want even to start talk about Feng shui and other soul practices.

When I get out of bed, I throw open my covers so that my bed can air out (that's how I've always been taught) Well and I don't close that during the day. In the evening when we go to sleep we crawl into bed and then we pull the sheets over us again.
In the winter I dare to close the windows in the evening after we have eaten and then I make the bed, but that is never in the summer.

That is so funny, my mom *swears* by the "airing" the beds out. She is the only person in the world that I have ever heard say that -- until you did :)

Love the idea that even if the rest of the day goes poorly, you accomplished one thing. Thanks for the link :)

I make the bed most days. I like getting into a made bed so, even if I don't do it in the morning, I'll do it right before going to sleep.

My cats love to be on the bed too - one of them likes to burrow under the covers but she's so small you hardly notice the lump. Have to be quick because I never want to "disturb" them :)

While I wasn't *taught* to air my bed out like this, sometimes that is one reason I won't make my bed...my bedroom may seem stuffy in the morning when I get up and I don't want to trap the stuffiness under the covers, lol.

Mine "hides" too and he's the same color as my bedspread. Yesterday, I didn't see him because he was in a new spot and I dropped a load of clean clothes on him. He let me he did NOT appreciate it! It was pretty funny - he really gave me "heck".

Here's the funny thing. I'm normally a let's have everything in it's place type of gal.... my husband convinced me that making the bed was pointless because we were just going to get back into the bed.... so I make my kids make their bed, while I do just the opposite. No, I don't feel bad about making them do this chore as it builds character and they will be ok..... and it is so do what I say, not what I do. That being said, our room is on the 2nd floor and we don't allow guests up there so no on really sees it and sometimes a little chaos in one's life is ok and the unmade bed is controlled chaos. (like how I just psychoanalyzed myself?). LOL..

I rarely ever make our bed, mainly because my DH is OK with it not being made! The only time I make it is when I wash the bedding once every 2 weeks! Or, if we are leaving out of town, then I will make it before we leave.
