"May you always have...
Walls for the winds
A roof for the rain
Tea beside the fire
Laughter to cheer you
Those you love near you
And all your heStrips might desire."
-Irish Blessing
"La Fheile Padraig", or "the Day of the Festival of Patrick", a both a religious and cultural observance celebrated on March 17th. It is a celebration of an ancient Catholic saint, Patrick, who lived around 385-461AD. It's not only a Catholic feast day, but celebrated by the Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran and Anglican Churches. And though it occurs during the Lenten season, restrictions on food and alcohol are lifted for the day. Not surprisingly, it is a national holiday in Both the republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, marked by jubilant parades, festivals, and the wearing of green & shamrocks. Traditional food and drink may include green beer, corned beef & cabbage or Reuben sandwiches, Irish soda bread, and Irish stew.
Trivia: did you know that although the secular celebration of St. Patrick's Day is always celebrated on March 17th, rarely the Catholic Church has moved its observance to avoid its coinciding with Palm Sunday during Holy Week. In 2008, it was moved to March 14th, and in 1940 on April 3rd. This won't happen again until 2160.
