Gaps between leaves/pine trees

Hello,

I am trying to replace dull, boring skies or backgrounds with something more interesting. If trees are involved, there's always gaps between the branches, leaves, pine needles, which remain the original color. Is there an easy way to eliminate those gaps without having to select each gap and erasing the blank spaces?

Maybe blending your photo with a background paper?

That's what I was doing. I have since attached an example to my post

try using all blending options,
I think when you set the blending mode to darker, it works best and the white disappears.

in the example I set the tree
to blending mode darker.

not perfect but for me it usually works

But I am no blending expert, maybe someone has better options or advise.

I don't what program you use ... today there is an update in the photoshop cc ... and one new thing is amazing: in one click you can replace a boring sky

Thanks, Diane, your idea worked! I duplicated the part of the photo that just had the tree tops and used the darker color blending mode. Then I took that section and pasted it over the photo, and it looks much better.
