GUESS WHAT!!!???!!!
Cait texted me this question when I was on the road yesterday morning: "You are literally never going to guess what was in my office when I got here"
My guesses:
A rat.
A squirrel.
It was two baby rats!!!
I have to keep my attachments to them in check because they are teeny tiny.
Long story short as I am mentally able to make it... Cait's boss was in a reptile store and saw these feeder rats. He knew how devastated she was to lose two of hers last month so he came up with some cockamamie story about needing to borrow her travel cage for his kids' hamsters. So when she gets to work, she sees the cage on her desk, thinking was just returning it. There was a water bottle on the side so she brought it to his office to return it. He says-- you didn't look in the cage, did you? You are going to need it.
She looks under the bedding and there are two tiny little babies all snuggled together. Two all-white females, one has two faint beige spots on her back. They are about 1.5" long (not counting the tail), but all of their teeth and fur are in. She is guessing they are about 4 weeks old. An actual pet breeder wouldn't have taken them from their mom so soon but seeing as they were feeders that isn't a priority. They seem healthy, have no respiratory issues, they are active and exploring so with luck and love, they will grow up to be wonderful ratties!
She already ordered baby rat food but wants to check with her vet to see if they need supplemental milk. She has been given them ensure along with the adult rat nuggets and John gave them hamster food. All good for the short term but long term they need something more balanced.
I have a few photos on my phone that Caitlyn sent me yesterday but you know I am going to have plenty more to share.
But first things first, I need to keep myself in check, just in case they are too young. (OTOH, I was holding them this morning and the one baby was chuckling like mad in my hand, and the other was borrowing herself into my sleeve. Soooo.... it might be too late. heh
Scott and I had a successful, productive day with my dad. They stacked all of the wood together and I painted the inside of the new door. Then I helped Scott load some wood into his truck to bring back to his house, turned around, and went back home. Cait was going to his house for dinner and he was excited to see the babies too.
I am cleaning for my friend this afternoon but am on call if Cait needs me to run to the pet store to get kitten milk or baby formula, or whatever her vet suggests. Oh my goodness, he is going to *laugh* at her. The last time we were there was a week after Otter died and got the bad diagnosis for Badger. They were discussing how rats break your heart over and over. He hasn't had rats in years after he lost an entire colony at once. She was saying how she didn't know how much more she could do either.
Wishing everyone a lovely day!
