A Little Bummed Out

I found out a year ago that my parent's photo albums had been thrown away when they passed away. I have some photos from my childhood that I managed to sneak out of the albums when I was a teenager. There are so many photos I would have loved to have if I had known then what was going to happen to them. This started me contacting relatives for photos. I was able to get three photos but I wasn't looking at the camera so you can't see my face very well. I had someone from the Facebook photo restoration group edit the photo that could be edited. He made it look like my eyes were open instead of closed. I also started trying to locate any class photos from schools I went to. My father was in the army so I went to many different schools. I found out my lower elementary school was torn down. Three of the military bases we were stationed at in Germany no longer exist and there is no way to get any photos from them. It probably seems a little silly for me to be so sad about this but I am pretty bummed out about it.:(

Thank you so much, Jenn! I feel like my childhood has somewhat been partially erased. I have pictures in my mind but that's where they'll have to stay. I may start documenting some memories without photos.

That is not silly at ALL!! I would be devastated if I found out all the photos were lost! I sure hope you can find precious photos for yourself!

Oh it's so sad to know that the photos had been tossed out! I think I only have 25 photos of me from the time I was born to when I left school, back in the day it was just too expensive to get photos developed so I don't many at all. I do have all of my school photos from Kinder to Year 3 of high school (except for 1st grade), but that makes up for 9 of the 25 I mentioned before! lol! thank goodness for school photos. Maybe take a look at FB and see if there are any school groups on there, I belong to two groups and I found photos of my elder sister and brother from primary school, which they didn't have. But yes, do document your memories, I have started a Word document which I just go to and write down stuff as it comes to me, one day I will sort it all out! lol!

I am so sorry that this happened to you. I love the idea of scrapping the memories even if you don't have photos.

It's also a really good reminder to me. My adult kids keep saying that they don't want old photos of DH and me from years ago. I am tempted to throw a bunch out. Even though they don't want them now -- and it's not like they are of their childhoods-- they might want them at some point in life.

Thank you for the wonderful idea of starting a continuous journal. That would be less overwhelming than trying to write it all at one time.

Don’t throw them out! You can’t undo that. You are right, they may change their mind at some point.

The places that are gone may have pictures somewhere online, so try to Google them and see. You won't be in them, but they can help tell your story about them. I found a picture of the place we stayed on our first vacation 50+ years ago that made me happy as it is long gone.

And being bummed out sounds normal to me!

Thank you so much. I watched some videos about a military base we lived on and took screenshots of some of the buildings. I looked online to find some groups that may have info. I will continue to look.
