I really like this idea. Not everyone has to be on the family tree in a pictorial version. This is so perfect. My nephew is the only one interested in the family stuff so I might "lift" your idea for a layout for him (he's a grownup, not a kid).

I realized I don't really have a favorite time period. When I'm researching history for various reasons, every time period seems fascinating to me. If I had to choose, I would pick the period leading up to and including the Great War (1900-1918).
