Why I Scrap

Inspired by week 17 of The Memory Logbook

Journaling: As I look through old photos from my Mom and my Grandma and ask them, who is this? or when was this taken and why? and they cant remember, it saddens me. I want to know these things and all sorts of other little minutia of their lives at those times. I mean, at the time they thought it important enough to take a picture of; so I scrapbook, telling the stories as they happen, so no one has to ask who, where, or why, and so I can remember. I dont want a pile of nameless faces. I want my family to know why I thought it important enough to record.

I also want them to know who they came from and why we do certain things. To know that when they catch themselves concentrating hard on something and out comes the tongue, that is something we get from my Mom. If they can carry a tune, that comes from a long line of singers from my Great Grandpa who sang in the Scottish Opera to my grandparents who were in Sweet Adelines and the Barbershop Quartet. The red hair comes from either the Irish on my Dads side or the Scottish on my Moms. The stubbornness is from the German in our blood. I want them to know the story behind my Great Grandmas necklace that all the women in the family wear or carry when we get married, and so much more.

One time my Aunt was visiting with us and we all went out for dinner. As we were sitting around the table eating, talking, joking and laughing, she said something to the effect that we were very lucky to have such a great family, so close and loving, and how much she appreciates being a part of it and hopes we realize how special that is. This is the main reason I scrap, the most important reason. I want to show how special our family is, and how much I do treasure each and every one of them and the relationship we have. I hope that this carries on in our own childrens lives and they bring that into their own families when they have them. This is who we are, what we want to carry on, THIS is who they come from. And THAT is why I scrap and what I want to leave behind in my pages.
