My Danish stepfather introduced our family to a non-negotiable Christmas tradition. It started out as rice pudding for dessert on Christmas Eve. An almond would be hidden in it, and whoever found it had to not fess up until all the dessert was consumed. Then he or she got a prize. The first year, as an adult, that I was in charge of the dessert, I made the decision to switch from rice pudding, which I do not enjoy, to English trifle. The rest of the family agreed with me, that the trifle is better. Only once did the almond get eaten before disclosure, when my, then, 11-year-old grandson chewed it up and swallowed it.
