week32 storm (left page)

Journaling:
On Thursday the rain began, as Tropical Storm Debby approached. Not so bad during the day, steady rain in the afternoon, but not too heavy. By the time I went to bed, it was starting to really come down. In the four hours between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Friday, Crozet got 6" of rain, to make 7-8" altogether.

Friday cleared up quickly. By Friday afternoon I was getting reports of missing bridges, downed trees, deep gullies, and other storm damage. As the day went on, the pictures got worse. Two bridges from the Connector Trail had been swept down the trail; the little no-name stream that on its good days has 6 or 8 inches of water appears to have risen to 6 or 8 feet. Another smaller bridge was gone entirely; I imagine there are pieces of its lumber in Lickinghole Creek somewhere. The boardwalk on the Creekside Trail was displaced, and one section disappeared. Later it was found down stream a ways. Downed trees made parts of the trail impassable. The new trail behind the Lodge had not held up to erosion, despite all the careful measuring and calculating when laying it out. And benches - well, any that were near a creek were gone or tossed up side down somewhere.

Oh, my goodness that's a lot of rain and destruction, I'm sorry for all that damage. Your photos show it all so well and your journaling describes it so graphically. Your background mimics pieces and things torn apart and I really like your title with the faded heart next to it. I remember that your group is always working on the trails, I'm hoping that they are coming along and will be passable again soon.
