Maude Adams(18721953)- simply as "Maudie" by her fans- Her mother was an actress and, travelling with her,Maude spent her early years in provincial theatres. At the age of five,she starred in a San Francisco theatre. Later,she gave the impression of being refined and dignified at all times,and she was openly helpful to aspiring young actors and actresses.She was known at times to raise the salaries of fellow performers out of her own pocket and also for quietly giving small gifts to stagehands. Maude Adams was also a descendant of Mayflower(1620: a crew of 25 to 30 and 102 passengers).She retired in 1918. Her greatest success: Peter Pan (Appearances on Broadway with this play:1905,1906,1912,1915).In 1922 she donated her estates at Lake Ronkonkoma to the Sisters of St. Regis for use as a novitiate and retreat house.
