She began working as a movie extra as a lark.Her good looks brought attention, and she soon established herself in The Playboy of Paris (1930) opposite Maurice Chevalier. She met actor Joel McCrea on the set of the 1933 film The Silver Cord. The attractive couple married in 1933, after a whirlwind courtship, and remained married until McCrea's death in 1990. Dee established herself as a movie actress by skillfully underplaying her roles in comedies, dramas and Westerns. She retired in 1953. In the 70s, she and McCrea were rumored to be worth between fifty and one hundred million dollars.
