The whipbird

We are more likely to hear it than see it because they live in the dense undergrowth in wetter forests along our east coast, feeding on insects and the smaller invertebrates there and on the ground. It's call is like a whipcrack and sometimes one bird will make the first part of the call and another will make the second part. Perfectly coordinated like an antiphonal choir.

I created this page for Anna's Year of ArtPlay using her Autumn Rust palette but the background paper is from AP Quaintville.
Beautifully minimalistic, which supports the theme of the elusive nature of this songster so very well. Funny you mention the antiphonal choir--we have a pair of pileated woodpeckers who complete each other's sentences. They don't come out much this time of year, but we like to sit on the deck and listen to them.
