The Rose & the Nightingale

A lift of Marleen's 'Sunflower' which inspired me the minute I saw it. Thanks Marleen!

The title refers to Oscar Wilde's story of a student who imagines himself in love. The object of his love would only dance with him if he brought her a rose and though he looked high and low he couldn't find one. A nightingale took pity on him and went looking too but the only rose it could find had been killed by frost. Making it flower again would cost the Nightingale its life. It sang all night and then pierced its own heart with a thorn. The Nightingale had decided that losing its life was a small thing if true love could be rewarded but when the lover presented the rose to his love, he is rejected. Another suitor had brought her jewels which she now fancied more than the rose. He decides that being in love is silly, throws the rose away and returns to his books.
