The Del

Journaling reads: The Hotel Del Coronado on North Island has always held a special place in my heart. For one, Ron grew up not far from the Hotel, and actually learned to swim in the pool. He said at one point the pool was a sea water pool. I also love it because I adore the Queen Anne style architecture. I love the round turrets with the red roofs. The Hotel opened in 1888. It is of total wood construction, and is said to be the first Hotel with electricity, with installation overseen by Thomas Edison himself. It also had the worlds first oil furnace. In 1904, Edison also helped with the first illuminated Christmas tree. The Del was for the affluent, but in its early years, a Tent City was created around the property where middle income families could rent out a tent at a much lower price and be right on the beach. The tent city even had it own police force, whose main task was to quiet down patrons if they got too loud. L. Frank Baum wrote much of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz while staying at the Hotel. Many movies have been filmed there, and anyone that has seen the movie Some Like It Hot should recognize The Del. I cant help but think about Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon roaming the grounds, each time I visit. The hotel is also said to be haunted. In 1892, Kate Morgan had been found dead, with the thought that she committed suicide. It had recently been determined that it may have been a murder. Many say she roams the halls and grounds of the hotel.

Well I love your layout, what you've done with the journaling, the way you've blended the photo...but our only experience at the hotel was a nightmare:)

Fascinating history! I agree about the Queen Anne style architecture-- it's enchanting, as is your painting and page!!!!! Stunning work, Joanie!

Ah, love the Del, as you may remember from my layouts last month...such a beautiful place, and now I have learned even more about it.

This is a great photo! and love the layout, the frame, the roof-colored brads, the font :)

Joanie, you showcased this historic hotel beautifully. I love the blues and reds and really enjoyed the story.

Wonderful LO and story. My late aunt drove us there when we visited her in San Diego, and although we only toured the main public rooms and did a little window shopping, the hotel has always stuck in my mind. Beautiful.
