The Californian

Journaling reads: The tall ships set sail in San Diego for the Labor Day Weekend 2013. Looking at them it is hard to believe that ships this glorious exist. The Californian is not an ancient vessel, but a replica of the 1847 Revenue Cutter C.W. Lawrence, which patrolled the coast of California enforcing federal law during the gold rush. The Californian was actually built in 1984 and launched for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. It is now part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, and in 2003, became the official Tall Ship of California, and currently calls San Diego its home.

The Process: I began with Annas Artsy Template No. 112, and moved the paint, and textures, etc, horizontally. I kept the photo frames veritcal, but moved them slightly. I attached the photo to each of the frame clipping masks, and then added a copy underneath the frames. This extra photo I applied a mask to and blend the edges of this photo out. I then applied masks to all the frames and frame shadows, and masked out any of the frame/shadows where the sailing vessel was. I added the urban stitches. The background was created by using a neutral paper, adding the patterned paper on top of that, and then using Blend Mode Divide, I masked out the center of this paper so that the pattern only showed around the edges. I added the old map behind the photo, but allowed it to be on top of the masked photo. I then applied Blend Mode Luminosity to allow it to take on the color of the background paper. I added the title and journaling and the elements above the journaling. I then began manipulating the various paint and texture layers of the template, moving them slightly if necessary. On top of everything, I added a striped patterned paper, and used blend mode Color Burn. I applied a mask to this striped paper, and painted out the stripes from the sailing vessel. I added the LoopDaLoop, the WarmGlow and the Edge Overlay above this striped paper to finish it off.
***thanks for looking***
the framing and blending of the photo is absolutely perfect, and it just looks so cool. Thanks for sharing your process.
