The African Queen - AnnaLift

. . . . you crazy, psalm singing, skinny old maid! Charlie Allnut has had it with the uptight Rose Sayer!

I love classic movies, they have stories and characters I really care about. I grew up watching them on TV and when I first heard this line delivered by Bogey with so much passion, I felt them with every fiber of my being. He meant it! The African Queen is one of my favorites.

The filming in the Congo was rather difficult, with much of the crew and cast sick with dysentery . . . except Bogey and director John Huston, who both took in their libation freely, much to disgust of Katherine Hepburn, who was suffering the worst from all the water she drank. You wouldnt know it watching the movie. They were both nominated for the Oscar and Humphrey Bogart won his only Oscar for his performance in The African Queen.

Process Notes: Building on artsy paper 6, I placed transfer 5 and clipped the main photo to it, putting it on Darker Color blend mode. I duplicated the photo and used filters on it, blending with Screen at 72% opacity.

Underneath the photo I placed transfer 9 along the right edge, the skinny line overlay and snake skin overlay leaving those as is. Over the photo and transfer I placed transfer 3, blending to Linear Burn at 100% opacity.

Using the frame from the Palette I clipped the photo of Bogey pulling the African Queen through narrow waters, positioning it on the side. Using a mask from the brushset, I clipped the photo of the African Queen to it, blending the mask to Darker Color at 100% opacity.

I created the title, positioning and gave it a stroke outline. Brought in the map stamp, recoloring after resizing and placing it just below the skinny lines overlay. I placed a dripped stains, recoloring it to the green from the Palette over the map and underneath the framed photo. Also brought in transfer 4, positioning it at the left edge above the photo.

I moved the leaves onto the page above the main photo but below the top photo. I blended it to Multiply at 83% opacity. Placed the button over the framed photo and the stitching over the main photo.

After typing out that famous line, I added the snake and gave it a little Outer Glow which gave a little dimension. Finally, I placed the mosquitoes. And there you have it.
