Tampa's Streetcar

Made for the As If I Were a Tourist Challenge.

Paisley Something by Bekah_E Designs and Sweet Made.
Public transportation in Tampa and environs consists of taxis, limousines, and a moderate bus system. If one is a tourist in this part of the country, one's best option would be a rental car. The buses are not particularly convenient for travellors, or even for downtown workers. Truth is, cars are the best and most popular option. With beaches about 40 minutes to the west, and the Orlando vacation destination about 60 miles to the east, a car is the best way to get around. That being said, there was a time when there were streetcars in Tampa.

The original electric streetcar line was built in 1892 and covered 53 miles to neighborhoods and the business district. It was a busy line. The last day of service of the original line was August 3, 1946.

The caption reads: Take a good look at these Tampa streetcars. You won't see them after today. They will be replaced tomorrow with buses, ending more than half a century of service on Tampa streets. The cars go into the barn tonight to be sold to Central and South American countries to spend their last days "south of the border."

However, streetcars real electric rail streetcars are now operational in Tampa. Now, I would hardly consider the streetcar that travels a 2.3 mile track from Ybor City to Channelside to downtown and back, public transportation, although it is for the public, and it does transport people. The street car, or trolley, runs on the original rails
