Journaling: When the baby swans are learning to fly, they have to work very hard to get their new wings to lift their large bodies out of the water. They make an awful racket wth their big wings flapping and their feet slapping across the water. You can see in this photo the splashes on the water made by their feet as they work at getting into the air. Every fall we hear and see their multiple attempts every day until they finally have lift off. Then they practice every day going a little farther until they finally fly out of the valley and away. The parents always come back by January or February, but we never see the babies after they fly away in the fall.
