State Capitol

Pictures from the Hawaii State Capitol.
Journaling reads: This morning we decided to rent mopeds so we could travel around the island easier. We got off to a late start and missed our tour at the Iolani Palace. We were both really bummed but went downtown anyways to see the state capitol. Like everything in Hawaii the state capitol makes sure to keep the Hawaiian culture alive within its walls. The pillars around the capitol are shaped like palm trees and there are eight of them, one for each of the Hawaiian islands. The capitol is open air. The middle picture on the right is looking up from the middle of the capitol building. I absolutely love how everything in Hawaii is so open. The only doors and ceilings in the capitol were on the offices. There is also a moat going around the capitol building, obviously symbolizing Hawaii as a state made up of islands. From there we walked over to Iolani Palace and took a picture from the outside. Iolani Palace was the official residence of the Hawaiian Kingdom's last two monarchs-King Kalakaua, who built the palace in 1882 and his sister and successor, Queen Lili'uokalani. We were sad we missed the tour, there's always next time. From there we had lunch on the pier and then went whale watching! Since we were visiting during winter, we were guaranteed to see whales, but wouldn't you know it, we did not see a single whale on the trip! We did get a "whale check" to come back for another tour, but we were leaving so soon that we were unable to make it back. The boat ride was a ton of fun though and we did get to see a large sea turtle.
