For this layout I extracted a photo and applied the treshold. When I got a good resulut I put severeal brushes on top of the extraction, clipped it in or applied lighten. If you applied the treshhold on your photo you can make amazing effects only to use the brushes, nothing more to do. Put it on top or behind the photo, whatever looks good. It seems difficult, but its super easy.
