Scott Fitzgerald was born (1896) in Minnesota in an Irish Catholic family.He entered Princeton University in 1913.He left Princeton to enlist in the US Army during World War I;however,the war ended shortly after Fitzgerald's enlistment.Fitzgerald met Zelda Sayre (19001948),the "golden girl," in Fitzgerald's terms,of Montgomery, Alabama youth society.Scott and Zelda were married (1920) in NYC.Their only child,Frances Scott "Scottie" Fitzgerald,was born on 1921.Fitzgerald was sidetracked by financial difficulties that necessitated his writing commercial short stories,and by the schizophrenia that struck Zelda in 1930 (she was moved to a clinic in Switzerland.Scott had been an alcoholic since his college days leaving him in poor health by the late 1930s.He died of a massive heart attack (1940).On the night of March 1948,a fire broke out in the hospital kitchen.Zelda was locked into a room.Zelda,died.
