Journaling Reads: Cars are not permitted on the road to Hermits Rest, so biking the route seemed a great way to leave the Grand Canyon crowds behind. And it was. Five minutes into the pedal, there was nobody but our group and an occasional shuttle bus on the road. The spaciousness felt great after the people jams we encountered in every other area of the park. The bikes were comfy cruisers and our guides were fun and knowledgeable about the area. The views were unparalleled, and we loved seeing the Colorado River twist through the canyons. Along with the Desert View Watchtower, Mary Colter also designed Hermits Rest. Now its a gift shop and snack bar, which seems commercial, but it was always intended to be commercial--a resting place for travelers--since 1914, when it was built by the Fred Harvey Railroad as a waystation for tourists. Who was the hermit? He was Louis Boucher, a prospector who lived alone in Dripping Springs, which we could see from the Rim thanks to our guides.
I love that you immersed yourself in the environment like you did! I also appreciate all the historic details and the map.

Great double page...love the elements you chose, as well - going to test out the smilies to see if they work in here...please excuse this if they do not!! LOL

Oh I love the view on the top left photo! This is such a fun page with the bikes added.
