Took a (very ugly) high-constrast selfie in harsh light so shadows and highlights would be well-defined. Then ran it through the poster edges filter to further increase the contrast between midtones, highlights and shadows. Then selected by color range > shadows, and then highlights, and put each (shadows, highlights and leftover midtones) on its own layer. Would have preferred to clip newsprint texture to the midtones layer, but needed to have personalized text, so made brushes out of the words I wanted to use and stamped those onto the midtones layer. Also stamped a few words onto the shadows layer (because it was so ugly plain black - I looked like I'd been on the losing end of a fistfight).

PS - A way to get a layer full of random types and sizes of fonts more quickly than stamping the words with brushes is to use a word cloud generator. I use Tagxedo http://www.tagxedo.com/ now - it doesn't save to an account and doesn't do svgs, but the hi-res pngs you can save are large enough for a lot of purposes. The interface can be confusing.
