In 1964, the Corps completed Keystone Dam 15 miles upstream from Tulsa. For years to come, Tulsans would believe that the Arkansas River was forever tamed, although that was hardly the case. Floods struck every two to four years during the 1960s and early 1970s. This, I believe, was a flood in Tulsa in 1964, just before the dam was operational. Dad was a fanatic about taking us to see all sorts of events like floods or fires. I remember when we would see those search lights, which were usually an indication of a new store opening or other event. We would drive around until we found them. I distinctly remember one time, after finding the location of the search lights at 11th & Lewis. It was a car lot with all the new models. Then we noticed Scott was nowhere to be found. He had walked into the middle of the busy street to look at the fire in the smudge pots (before traffic cones). And he’s been a firebug ever since.
