Can't remember where I picked this tip up, but it's a great one:
Using a levels layer set to a particular blend mode usually, but not always in my experience, has the same effect as duplicating the layer and setting the duplicate layer to that blend mode. However, using a levels layer produces a file with a smaller size and has the added advantage of giving you three sliders to play with.
