The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is affectionately referred to as America’s Catholic Church. It is the largest Roman Catholic church in North America. The foundation stone was laid on the 23rd of September 1920, however it seems to have been conceived of as early as 1846. It was in 1846 that the Bishops of America declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as the patroness of the United States under her title of the Immaculate Conception. The Courier Journal, a Massachusetts newspaper published an article containing the following “a magnificent Catholic Church to be built at Washington, D.C. after the manner of the great cathedrals of the Old World from subscriptions of every Catholic Parish in America.” The National Shrine was finally dedicated on 20 November 1959, nearly 40 years after the foundation stone was placed.
We visited in July 1964. The year before in July 1963 the Basilica's bells for the Carillion were consecrated and hoisted in the 329-foot tower.
