"Today we are strong enough to meet today's challenge. But the very fact that we are strong may put off the challenge to another day. The Soviets think that time is on their side. We believe otherwise. But meanwhile, we cannot afford to lower our guard." ― General Nathan F. Twining, Former Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, 1960 Armed Forces Day.
Armed Forces Day was created in 1949 and first celebrated on 20 May 1950. In 1961 President John F. Kennedy declared Armed Forces Day as a national holiday to be observed on the third Saturday of May. Traditionally it is a day with parades, demonstrations, and air shows. Armed Forces Day is celebrated around the world. As a family, we went to many Armed Forces Day celebrations from Alaska to Turkey.
My son is a pilot, but he flies private jets. When he was much younger we would always go to the air shows, guess that inspired him. He would love these photos of the planes.
