Each day, the nurse assigned to Mamas hospital room would come in for the morning routine which included updating the current date on the dry erase board. Mama was initially distracted, and not paying attention to what was written. She endured the usual checks of her blood pressure, temperature and pulse. I sat in a chair next to her bed. My dad had not yet arrived, so it was one of those rare moments that we had to ourselves. She was so thin, yet so beautiful to me. Im not sure how much time passed, but eventually she noticed the date that was written on the board ... I watched as the realization hit. She looked at me with huge, sad eyes, and said, Oh No! Today is your birthday! I know what she was thinkin ....
My birthday falls very close to the fourth of July. It was often forgotten over the years. When I was younger, it hurt my feelings. As a teenager, I sure let her know it. I certainly regret that now!
Her obvious distress touched me, but I didnt want her to be upset. The words that came from me next bring me peace even today. I said, Mama, a kid just wants to know that their Mama thinks about them on their birthday. You just gave me that. She asked what else I would like for my birthday. I explained I just wanted to be with my Mama - to spend time with her.
We shared that moment together, and as I reflect back, this is my most memorable birthday. The last birthday I had with her. She lost her battle with cancer before I would celebrate another ...
