Journaling reads: Since1939 Brigantine Island’s wetlands and bay habitats were protected as a refuge for migratory water birds, followed in 1967 by Barnegat. In 1984 they were combined. Together, the refuge protects more than 48,000 acres of southern New Jersey coastal habitats which is actively managed for migratory birds. More than 82 percent of the refuge is wetlands, of which 78 percent is salt marsh. The refuge’s location in one of the Atlantic Flyway’s most active flight paths makes it an important link in seasonal bird migration.
Our trip this year was in mid-October so, instead of seeking birds, we just enjoyed the almost-deserted shore and beach.

Oh my gosh this is my favorite birding site in NJ. We have been going there for over 40 years. I am sorry you missed all the birds because they are pretty spectacular. love the two pages, beautiful photos!

@nancyr Thank you for your kind comments. How exciting that you know Brigantine, too! We've also been going here off and on for several years and have seen lots of fabulous birds in the past at different times of year. We get lots of water birds in Florida, of course, but my favorite of the NJ birds here are the red-winged blackbirds and I did see a couple. Maybe next time we'll see them and lots more.

That is so beautiful. We went by there in our boat in 2000, 2001 and 2003 but didn't get this close. You sure got some nice shots to put on this page. thanks for sharing the close up of the beach. I love deserted beaches!

These are great pictures. I like how you captured all the various elements of the secluded beach. The delicately textured background and seashells are perfect. Great job on this double page!

Perfect beach imagery! I am from NJ and I can't believe I've never been here! Of course I am not a birder but I've been everywhere from Beach Haven to Cape May but somehow Brigantine escaped notice. Love your use of the shell embellishments!

Beautiful NJ, most people don't even know it exists! Your photos are gorgeous and I like your soft blending and placement. So funny, I see red-winged blackbirds in Indiana at my sisters but have never spotted them in NJ!
