JOURNALING:

Obsessed
I have been obsessed with the Canada Goose ever since they first started appearing in my area in large numbers sometime in the 1980's. At one time migratory, they now maintain a year-round status and seem to be as common as sparrows. Yes, they can be QUITE messy. I still remember the parking lot at the doctor's office that was a minefield of goose poop to navigate, as was Mapfre Stadium's parking lot during a recent soccer match. But, they are so magnificent looking. And BIG, averaging over 8 pounds with wingspans up to 6 feet!! I love how they nonchalantly stroll around, seemingly oblivious to any traffic backups they may cause when they decide to cross the street. I love the distinctive "honk" they make, especially when on the wing in their classic "V" formation.
It was precisely that "honk" that I first noticed the other day when I left the theatre after enjoying a delightful performance of "South Pacific." I looked up and saw at least four separate flocks flying around the area. And, as one group flew low, directly overhead and I looked up, all I could think of was this probably wasn't the best thing to be doing, and I silently prayed, "Don't poop. Don't poop!"
