Process
Although I wasn't blending a heritage photo, I followed the basic steps in Adryane's blending mode tutorial http://www.annaaspnesdesigns.com/blending-vintage-photos/ starting with an artsy paper background and then blending my photo into it. Because my photo didn't have an overexposed, blown-out background, I needed to duplicate the photo a few times and use a variety of blending modes to approximate the look I wanted. Here is a recap of my duplications/blending modes: original photo/screen mode; duplicate photo 1/overlay mode; duplicate photo 2/multiply mode at 35% opacity; duplicate photo 3/vivid light mode at 34% opacity; and duplicate photo 4/vivid light mode at 25% opacity. With each duplication, I used layer masks to remove areas of the photo background until the photo was completely extracted.
After I got things mostly right, I started to work with the Artsy Transfers. I used them in the background, but I was also able to boost the color of Ollie's fur and make other color adjustments by using various transfer layers on different blending modes. I also added some black brushstrokes from the Different Strokes 11 brushset, just to balance out the bold title.
As a last step, to soften and unify the colors, I added Solid Paper #3 to the top of the layers panel. Using a layer mask and a blending brush, I revealed the areas of the design I wanted in different opacitiesthe texture of the brush made everything nice and soft. I highlighted certain areas with a peachy pink using the brushes in the Artplay Palette.
The little bit of journaling, the word strip, the branch, the MultiMedia Daisies, the buttons, and the Threadz came last. As a final touch, to bring some of that blue to the bottom, I threw on a blue gradient fill adjustment layer, set to Color Burn blending mode at 50% opacity.
