For my girl, the winter was for having fun. To her, the snow - which was soft, clean and white in mountains, not unlike the dirty mush in the city - represented a clean canvas calling to her to be painted with her creations, roll in it, get buried in or to make what we called snow moths (as opposed to snow angels).
