My Butterfly Garden

There's one little garden that I devote annually to stuff that birds and butterflies find particularly alluring. It's always a pleasure to watch the activity there. After the blossoming season, the seed pods keep the place hopping with life well into the winter. That's the one garden that I never deadhead.

Notes in Photoshop Elements 14

I started with two photos, one snapped landscape and the other portrait but both essentially of the same scenea beautiful butterfly enjoying my garden. I blended the landscape photo into the Artsy Paper with inverted masking and my favorite blending brush, #1142 from the Artsy Brush set. I then extracted the butterfly from the photo and scattered it across the surface twice. I slid the second photothe portrait oneat the bottom of the layer stack over the Artsy Paper and blended it in, again, with inverted masking and the blending brushes. I wanted just a hint of the flowers, so went soft on the brushstrokes to reveal the image. I then duplicated the photo, reduced the opacity, and applied the color burn blending mode. I nestled the smallest butterfly on an artstroke from the Artplay Palette.

The word art came nexttwo of the word transfers on reduced opacity, with some layer-masking to blend them in, and the title.

To finish up I added transfers/overlays from the Artplay Palette (including a nice spatter overlay that I tinted blue) to add texture and a little light in the dark areas. I added embellishments, slicing the word strip in two to better fit my design.

To even out the tones, as a last step, I applied a distress layer, which is simply a textured image at the top of the layer panel set to multiply, at reduced opacity, layer-masked to give texture and color where needed.
Love the butterflies and color contrast! Also love the idea of a garden for birds and butterflies! A idea for next year.

Laura, this is just beautiful! And I especially love reading about your one garden that is always ready for visitors, year round. Love this layout a great deal.
